Gheorghe Stanila: The mining project proposed by Gabriel Resources in Rosia Montana could be a second Cernobil

February 24, 2012

Gheorghe Stanila, PDL counselor at Campia Turzii, said on Thursday, during a Local Council meeting, that “for us, Rosia Montana is like Cernobil”.

(On the 26th of April 1986, in the ex-USSR, reactor number 4 of the power plant in Cernobil exploded, causing a 10 days fire. During the accident, huge quantities of radioactive materials were released into the atmosphere.)

In Rosia Montana, a cyanide mining project of huge proportions has been proposed by Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC), a company owned by Gabriel Resources and Minvest.

Counselor Gheorghe Stanila assessed the most affected would be people living on the banks of Aries.

Stanila said cyanide mining technologies are a hazard for the environment and, in case the project would start, it would lead to an ecological disaster.

“I am blowing the whistle for the younger people, so that they will get involved, because it’s them who would be affected in the future”, said Gheorghe Stanila (photo).
